Please pass this on to your networks in the Border Ranges Area The Great Eastern Ranges – Border Ranges Covenant Program Protecting natural corridors to help native ecosystems cope with climate change. The Nature Conservation Trust of New South Wales (NCT), a non-profit organisation promoting nature conservation on private land in NSW, is calling on property owners in the Border Ranges region, extending south to Nightcap Range and west to the Tooloom Range, to apply to the Border Ranges Covenant Program which aims to improve landscape connectivity as a part of the Great Eastern Ranges initiative. The Border Ranges Covenant Program, developed in conjunction with the Great Eastern Ranges initiative and the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC), is seeking expressions of interest from landholders in the Border Ranges area who are interested in protecting areas of natural vegetation on their property through a conservation covenant. A conservation covenant is an agreement between a landholder and the NCT to protect the environmental integrity and biodiversity of a natural area on private land. The covenant is registered on the property’s title to ensure protection in perpetuity and also allows the registered landholder access to the NCT’s Stewardship Program, a network that provides support to the landowner to manage the conservation values of the property into the future. An assessment of conservation values will be used to select suitable properties, as a maximum of eight conservation covenants are available through the program. Successful landholders will be eligible for financial support through the program to assist in the management of the conservation area. Previous applicants need not re-apply, all applications will be re-assessed in this program. This project has been assisted by the New South Wales Government through DECC and the Environmental Trust. “A conservation covenant gives a landholder the satisfaction that the bush land on their property that they love,is protected long into the future. Landholders that apply a covenant to their property are helping increase the area of native habitats that are protected, and are also assisting native plant and animal species in this important ecological corridor to cope with the eects of climate change.” Georgia Beyer, Project Manager Expressions of interest from landholders for the Border Ranges Covenant Program close on Friday 12 December, 2008.
